Looking back, I can now feel and understand the amusement, and I can as well comprehend the frustrations of Uncle Steve. What that man went through, I mean what we made him go through; Hell! I could so feel it now.
Uncle Steve is the best lecturer I know if not the best man ever, the most tolerant, gentle and even chivalrous lecturer in the University. Year after year he was made to go through the same horror show, over and over. After Felix had it the first year, he quickly realized like I’m just realizing now that Steve is indeed a great man, and re-instated him as the dance lecturer for year1 and year2 students; no one else can be that strong enough for the task.
All my life, I mean before I got admission into the University of Lagos all I wanted to study was Law. There were other considerations like Journalism, English, and Linguistic… (That Linguistic part was after I got admission but never mind). I was either going to study Law or Mass Communication like many great Art students of nowadays. Ask most of my class14 members that we graduated together from that department and you’ll know mine was a far better story, some people like Muyiwa initially wanted to study Medicine (Well he’s still going to become a doctor anyways), but shit happened and he wanted Law, then Mass Communication and then French; Oh! English sorry. Anyways, his first lecture as a student in the University was with the good man Uncle Steve, and he was told that without black and black and a bottle of water he should not bother to come for the next class. He thought it was a joke.
Imagine someone like Joshua, dude knew what he was in for. He was finally fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a thespian, he didn’t even bother to show up in class with any black and black and a bottle of water till the semester was almost over. And when he came we all knew who the thespian here really was. Imagine the face of Sanya who was almost thinking he was going to be the boss here; wait man, you haven’t even seen Ajimati, Bright, Keshinro or Faramade eventually. It didn’t take eternity, dude realized he wasn’t cut out for this shit and crossed to Visuals. Damian was not the type of man to concede without throwing his last punch, he gave it a fight till the very end but he was too stiff to even sit. Oh! You forgot uncle Steve taught us to sit in the first class? Aunty Meg couldn’t take it, she was out to pee or something when we were learning to sit.
There were too many parts of the story but that is none of my business today, the part that is really paining me now is putting myself in the shoe of Uncle Steve and finally understanding what that man went through. Very very few men could have survived that; Uncle Steve is a man like no other. Wait first, you know that moment when you tell someone you studied Theatre and they are like “Will you teach me how to dance?” The hell I will, you can start the class tomorrow.
Back to my point jare, imagine having to sit through a compulsory session of watching Dom dom, Bayo and Odun dance, watching Spence trying so hard to impress, and Ruben Mary effortlessly shaking her immensely huge ass. Don’t laugh yet, I’ve not even mentioned Apata who dances with only one leg or John Jennifer who while dancing to Celin Dion’s “Everynight in my dream” can combine Azonto, Bata, Shoki and even Shakiti bobo all into the same movement, and would have started dancing like five minutes before the music starts and another minute after the music has stopped and then volunteer to teach you the movements since your boo must mean you were so wowed. The good man Uncle Steve endured them all and still gave us Ds and Es and sometimes Cs sef.
I don’t miss school, I know most of you who didn’t have a life before Akoka and now after it, must be feeling like the best part of your life has ended, wait, it hasn’t! We can all learn from the good man’s endurance who after some years was relieved with Dr Felix, even though he was still handed back the year1 and year2 horror dance show after Felix realized how much he couldn’t endure. Bottom line is after four years; the likes of Charles, Nonso, Lola, Apata, Femi, Muyiwa are finally free of him and he of them and he didn’t have to watch the horrible show of dance performances anymore. So things will change and eventually get all better for all of us, we just don’t know who the new freshers are now, but we know they can’t be worse. Wait, what about that Bisola’s girl in year2? See shit always happens jare….
